How does explainability work?

Explainability refers to techniques that make AI model decisions and predictions interpretable and understandable to humans. More specifically, explainability aims to provide transparency into how models arrive at outputs given a set of inputs.

Explainability methods expose the key factors driving model behavior by attributing the importance of different input variables or analyzing the relationships learned internally in the model. For example, sensitivity analysis tracks how tweaking inputs influences the output to reveal salient dependencies. Local interpretable model explanations like LIME approximate model decision boundaries for individual predictions.

Techniques like attention mechanisms in transformer models visually highlight which parts of the input influenced the output most strongly. Methods may quantify uncertainty or provide example cases to explain model logic. Explainability metrics evaluate intrinsically how interpretable a model is based on its architecture.

Explainability peeks inside the black box of AI models, whether by analyzing input-output flows or the model parameters themselves. Developing explainable AI ensures stakeholders can audit, validate, and calibrate model decisions properly. Human-interpretable explanations build appropriate trust in AI by providing traceability into model reasoning in terms people understand.
