How does associative memory work?

Associative memory refers to the ability to store and retrieve information based on relationships and connections between different elements. It allows a system to efficiently identify and utilize relevant knowledge for decision-making and inference.

In large language models, extensive associative memory is formed through training on massive text datasets. By analyzing statistical patterns across the training data, these models build up an intricate web of semantic connections in memory. However, this memory reflects the distribution of information in the training data, which is typically drawn from a fixed past time period. So while associative memory empowers large language models with immense capabilities, it also faces limitations in terms of staying relevant. Novel solutions are needed to refresh and override outdated memory with current knowledge. Overall, associative memory provides scale and grounding but must be actively maintained to unlock the full potential of large language models.
